summer pool safety tips - tramonto homes for sale phoenix

If you’re like most people, you’re looking forward to spending time in the sparkling, clear water of your (or your neighbor’s) backyard pool.

However, it’s important that you’re up-to-date on the latest pool safety tips so you can enjoy the water without being in—or putting anyone else in—danger.

Hot Pool Safety Tips From the Pros

The American Red Cross says that swimming pool accidents are frighteningly common—but most are avoidable. If you’re a pool owner, it’s your responsibility to ensure that you do what you can to prevent accidents from happening, such as:

  • Securing your swimming pool with barriers, and include a self-closing, self-latching gate.
  • Supervise kids at all times, and make sure you’re always within arm’s reach.
  • Maintain the proper chemical levels, circulation and filtration, and test the pool’s levels frequently so you can minimize the risk of illnesses, rashes and other health issues.
  • Establish—and enforce—rules at all times.

PoolSafely.gov has several free resources for parents with children, including pool safety videos, “Pool Safely” beach balls, temporary tattoos and other great items that will help your kids remember to play it safe while they’re in the water, as well. (You can order them here.)

What Else Can You Do?

Use a non-slip material on the pool deck, diving board and ladders to prevent slips and falls. Make sure the steps of your pool ladder are at least 3 inches wide, and make sure the handrails are small enough for a child to hold.

If you can, mark the slope of your pool with a safety float line—and make sure only experienced swimmers go past it.

Limit horseplay in and around the pool, and ensure that if kids are engaging in horseplay, that an adult is present.

Pet Pool Safety

If your four-legged friend is a swimmer, install a pet-safe ladder so he or she can get in and out easily. Like children, pets need to be supervised in and around the water, and remember that pool covers aren’t a form of protection for your pet. Pool covers can look like a solid surface to pets.
