Phoenix’s “Take a hike. Do it Right.”

As one of National Geographic’s Best U.S. Hiking Cities, Phoenix has embraced its great trail system and provides hikers with numerous locations—but responsible hiking is important to ensure safety on the trails (for you and for other hikers).

The City of Phoenix’s “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” Program includes simple rules that help keep hikers safe in the Sonoran Desert Preserve and elsewhere, such as:

  • Don’t hike alone, and make sure someone knows where you are (and when you’ll return)
  • Remember that you’ll encounter rocky terrain, natural hazards such as bees, rattlesnakes and other wildlife
  • Try to wait for shade when hiking, or hike in the morning or evening
  • Stay hydrated and bring plenty of water; you need at least a quart for short hikes, and you should turn around when you’re halfway through your water
  • Bring a cell phone and a small package of first-aid supplies
  • Be honest with yourself about your abilities, and don’t do more than you’re able
